Spleen Screen
Hemangiosarcoma

Hemangiosarcoma in Dogs
Hemangiosarcoma is a malignant tumor of blood vessel cells and is associated with serious internal bleeding and rapid internal spread. There are three common locations that account for the majority of cases:
  •  Spleen forms
  • Skin and subcutaneous forms
  • Heart-based  forms
Detection
It is easier to detect Hemangiosarcomas involving the skin because they can be visible and can be felt on the physical exam. It is much more difficult for the veterinarian to detect the spleen forms because the spleen is a deep-seated abdominal organ. Most often, hemangiosarcomas grow unnoticed until they become unusually large. And unfortunately, splenic growths have the tendency to break open and bleed profusely, leading to a life-threatening situation and emergency surgery, regardless of whether they are benign or malignant. The goal of early detection of hemangiosarcomas or any other splenic mass is to detect them at the earliest possible stage lending to better treatment options and prognosis.

Ultrasound Visualization
At Noah’s Ark Animal Hospital, it is now possible to perform a Spleen Screen using an ultrasound probe to get a detailed view of the spleen. And by using ultrasound technology, spleen masses can be detected earlier than with traditional x-rays. The ultrasound images are read in real time and so the results are available immediately.
